One of the few 2019s that may surpass the 2016 version, Frédérick Charvin's 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape-a blend of eight different grape varieties-is a terrific effort. It starts with modest scents of struck match, so give it a quick splash into a decanter, then sit back and enjoy the gentle herbal undertones and voluminous red berry and cherry notes. Full-bodied and concentrated, it's also supple and harmonious on the palate and long and silky on the finish. Matured in equal parts foudre, older barriques, stainless-steel tanks and concrete, there's no obvious oak to be found, and the fruit shines.

Perfumed and exotic (which is common from this terroir), the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape offers up lots of wild strawberry and blueberry fruits as well as floral, minty, spicy aromas and flavors. Nicely textured on the palate, it's medium-bodied and has ripe yet building tannins and outstanding balance. It's a complex, exotic Châteauneuf du Pape to enjoy over the coming decade.
